The Note Birds Music Reading Method

The Action Book shows small children to easily read all the notes of the grand staff. The focus is for piano, but The Action Book will be useful for learners of any treble or bass clef instrument. The Note Birds re-present an old proven method in a refreshingly colourful and engaging way. Its flexible approach means that learners can go at their own pace, in the way that best suits their dominant learning style.

The system aims to demystify the abstract nature of written music and give potential little musicians a head start. In the long term, it provides them with the understanding needed that will give them a richer musical experience with the confidence to read and play from music straight away. More and more young people turn to piano synthesia videos to learn by rote and pattern on platforms like YouTube. They can learn music that pleases them, but the approach is long, drawn out and shallow, and music learned in this way is soon forgotten.

There are three main learning chapters and each chapter has more or less the same structure:

  • 1 learning module about the new notes,

  • a game with the Note Birds centred around memorising the single mnemonic,

  • 2-3 practice activities,

  • a quiz with a printable certificate awarded.

"My child loves music. He/she is a beginner but practices without needing me to push very much. I want my child to enjoy music and even excel in the subject.  I believe in the value of reading music. Learning to read all the notes of the musical staff will help my child a lot when moving on to new notes in lessons. I am often able to encourage and demonstrate good practice habits and learn alongside my child. We can fly with The Note Birds as an extra activity to supplement lessons. I understand that siblings will need to sign up separately with a different email address. I have a tablet or a smartphone which runs well with my broadband connection. I have viewed the EBMA Privacy Policy and am happy to sign up to the platform for free with my child's real name. I know that this is because certificates will be named from this information. I understand that I should test my connection with the preview content after signing my child up before purchasing the Action Book."

"I have young students who would benefit from an educational but fun music activity. To help them 'see' the lines and spaces more clearly and learn the positions and names of notes will mean we'll be able to cover more in lessons going forward. My transfer students struggle to read music and sight reading is a long, slow process. ANYTHING that I can do now to help demystify the musical staff for them will be worth the time investment. I can ask parents to sign their child up as a user with a simple password that is special to the child. I will ensure that they understand the need to sign up with their child's own name for certification purposes. I will be able to access my students' own platform memberships to teach from and set them Note Bird assignments at home, as well as direct them to view their badges and certificates. I have a tablet or a smartphone which runs well with my broadband connection. I understand that I should test my connection with the preview content before purchasing or asking parents to purchase the Action Book."

"I love music and would like to be able to read and play the music I enjoy at sight. This sounds like the thing that will help me do that more easily. To get the most from my learning with The Note Birds, I know I will need to apply and practice the concepts with my own music. If I am below the age of 18, I will be sure to have permission from a responsible adult in my life before signing up. I understand that I will need to sign up with my proper name, as I would like to see my real name on my certificates. I have a tablet or a smartphone which runs well with my broadband connection. I understand that I should test my connection with the preview content after signing up and before purchasing the Action Book."

Give Your Child The Gift Of Music

B is very interested in doing these exercises. The method is very interesting and challenging. Every time he completes a task, he wants to go on to the next one.

Helped reinforce knowledge which was deep in the memory bank. Also learned something new. Brilliant work! Kids will be learning without realising.

KG

This is an excellent interactive teaching tool and I thoroughly recommend this for teaching music skills to your children.

JG

Have finished the course and really enjoyed it. I can’t imagine how much work has gone into creating this. It’s really thorough and the graphics/animation very engaging and instructions very clear. Brilliant introduction to reading music.

"I would have learnt so much more with this as a resource in my school music lessons!" JF

As a complete beginner I found it took me through at a very secure pace. I can't believe how much I've learned and now feel confidant in.
